2009 MATHWEST Spring Conference ~ "Multiple Representations"

MATHWEST is pleased to announce its tentative program for this spring's mathematics conference. A complete conference mailer will be sent to our mailing list or can be downloaded from this site. The day will include four 90-minute sessions, a luncheon with colleagues, as well as an array of vendors. Our format includes a three tier conference with tracks for elementary, middle, and high school teachers.

This year's theme is Multiple Representations, which helps to establish connections for students. Research shows that students learn mathematical concepts more readily and with deeper understanding when they learn across different forms of representation. When they are able to see the math in different ways - through multiple representations - they begin to broaden their critical thinking skills and make meaningful connections. It just adds up!

Our schedule of speakers is subject to change without notice. Please visit the web site for up-to-date information as it becomes available. If you have questions or for more information, please contact Scott Trahan, our conference chairperson, at sltrahan@gmail.com.

AP Calculus Practice Exam

On Saturday, March 28th, well over 175 students in Western Massachusetts will take the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC released exams to prepare for the actual tests by the College Board in May. The session will allow students to take either of the 2003 AP Calculus exams in an appropriate and timed atmosphere.  Students will start the exam with the open response problems, followed by the multiple-choice sections.  This is done to allow time for the instructors to grade the open response problems while the multiple-choice sections are administered.  Following the exam, lunch will be served.  Before students leave, they will receive their graded test, a score, and a complete answer key. Cost is $15, and a registration form must be received for each student by Friday, March 20th.

Board Members Wanted

We would also like to invite members to serve on the MATHWEST Board of Directors. Not only do you receive free membership, you have the opportunity to expand your resume, make professional connections, and help organize current mathematics professional development. In addition, conference fees are waived for chairing a conference subcommittee and certain officer positions receive a stipend. If interested, please contact our president, Tricia Lynn at mathwestnews@yahoo.com.
